About Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is a welcoming country with a rich variety of sights, sounds, smells, and tastes to offer. The people are friendly and helpful, even though many in the rural areas do not speak English. The official languages are Sinhala, Tamil, and English.
Visitors to Sri Lanka should update their usual vaccinations before going, as well as getting shots for yellow fever, hepatitis A and B, polio, rabies, and typhoid. They should also make themselves aware of the symptoms of mosquito-borne illnesses such as malaria and dengue fever and take steps if these symptoms are detected. Contact the Sri Lankan embassy for a full health advisory.
Please be aware that fighting has resumed between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tigers (LTTE). It is best to check advisories before you leave for Sri Lanka, as there will probably be places that should be avoided due to heavy fighting and/or dangerous conditions such as land mines.
