Things to Do in Srilanka
There is no shortage of activities in Sri Lanka for even the most relaxed or most active visitor. A few of the most popular are listed below.
Whale Watching
Kalpitiya is the place to do this from November to March; if you are in Sri Lanka from June to September, the best departure area is Trincomalee. The waters off Sri Lanka are a whaling protected zone, so there is a good chance of seeing many different species of dolphins and whales on one trip.
Elephant Safari
This exciting activity, which gives an elephant’s-eye view of the island, is offered in many different locations. Regular safaris are also available.
Diving
This can be done year round, since the monsoon winds only affect half the island at a time and much of the island is surrounded by reefs. Interesting options for more advanced divers include wreck diving, dive tours, and dive safaris. Gear, including photographic equipment, can be rented in many places.
Bird Watching
This is also an all-year activity, and the numerous forest preserves on the island make for excellent tropical bird viewing.
Trekking, Hiking, and Mountain Biking
These trips allow you to catch glimpses of the country’s rural life in addition to the beautiful environment. Many tour operators have set courses with guides for groups or individuals. You can also head out on your own, but make sure the place you plan to visit doesn’t require a permit.
Kayaking, Canoeing, and White-Water Rafting
Hotels near rivers and lakes will often rent out kayaks or canoes (and a guide upon request) that will allow tourists to explore the waterways. Be sure to request information about the routes whether or not you hire a guide, as there may be surprisingly large waterfalls around the next corner. Kitulgala, about 80 km from Colombo, is known as the home of white-water rafting on the island.
Shopping
Colombo, the capitol of Sri Lanka, is famous for the variety of its goods. Buy spices, cloth, and souvenirs of all kinds at the markets, and then celebrate your purchases with a bite or a pint at one of the city’s many pubs.
Ballooning
The hot air ballooning season is from approximately October to April, though of course the availability of a tour on any given day is contingent on weather conditions. This is a spectacular and unusual way to view Sri Lanka. Trips usually last three to four hours.
